Terrorism and natural disasters are a reality for the community at large and the disastrous events of September 11th, 2001 have changed our lives significantly. From a societal standpoint, we now have a personal responsibility for the safety of our families, our neighbors and our nation.

This presentation will provide accurate information on Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) that could possibly be deployed in terrorist attacks, including biological agents. We will discuss the effects, acute injury and trauma casued by various agents, including chemical, biological, radiological, and explosive agents. An overview of risk-communication and appropriate self & buddy-care responses for those affected will be provided.

LECTURE OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss the indications of a possible biowarfare attack.
  • Identify operational linkages between the District's Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Plan, Department Of Health (DOH), Department Of Defense (DOD) other federal, state and regional resources, citizen corps and community residents.
  • Identify plan for evacuation or 'sheltering in place'
  • List preventive measures for citizens and first responders.
  • Provide reference web sites, guidelines, and FEMA materials for family and community emergency preparedness.
