Despite
a history of more than twenty years, infection with the
AIDs
virus continues to be a enormous problem for people of color.
It is
with alarm that we note that currently there are more than
42 million
people living with HIV/AIDS in the world and more than 50%
are comprised
of Women. There were about 5 million new infections worldwide
in 2002.
In the U.S. there are approximately 40 thousand new infections
annually
and most of these are in persons younger than 25 years of
age.
An emerging trend is seen in women who are infected through
the
heterosexual route. Of even greater concern is that African
American
and Hispanic women who comprise approximately 20% of the
population are disproportionably impacted by this disease
representing about 75% of the cases in women. During this
course, the participant will learn the
specific aspects of the epidemiology, clinical presentation,
diagnosis
and social/behavioral habits that contribute to the rise
of this disease
in populations of color. Management strategies will be provided
that
can help ameliorate these trends in people of color.
