It is becoming increasingly
clear that the full potential of the Human Genome Project
(HGP) and other advances in human genetics will not be realized
unless each segment of society becomes "genetically
literate". Perhaps not surprisingly, studies have indicated
that most members of the general population are not knowledgeable
about genetics, genetic technologies, and the possible ethical,
legal, and social issues associated with genetic information.
This presentation will provide
information on the ethical, legal, and social implications
of human genetics/genome research, particularly as they
relate to African Americans and other people of color. Participants
will have the opportunity to engage in discussion about
the benefits, risks, and limitations of genetic research,
as well as issues related to the integration of genetic
information and technologies in the clinical setting.
It is anticipated that this
session will enable attendees (and others with whom they
interact) to make more informed decisions about participation
in genetic research and utilization of genetic services.
